Arnaldo Caprai, Collepiano, Montefalco Sagrantino, DOCG, 2013

Always on the lookout for another Umbrian delight, Arnaldo Caprai’s 2013 Sagrantino was a delicious treat. Made from 100% Sagrantino grapes, Collepiano, named for the slopes and hills on which the vineyards lay, is rich and complex delivering an elegant and well-balanced combination of red fruits, blackberry jam, clove, black pepper, balsamic essence, leather and vanilla. The wine spent 22 months in French oak and 6 months in bottle before availability to consumers. As expected with a Sagrantino, it is a delightfully full-bodied wine and the tannins are present, indicative of a wine with excellent aging potential. This wine pairs well with red meats with good fat content, rich tomato-based stews and game. Arnaldo Caprai also shares some traditional Umbrian recipes that are the perfect accompaniment for this wine, including baked lamb with rosemary, fennel and garlic, pork with raisins and pine nuts, and stuffed pigeon dressed in lemon peel, nutmeg and parmesan.

Arnaldo Caprai’s winery has been making tremendous leaps in the area of green vineyard practices, serving as a role model in Umbria, and applying practices of limited use of pesticides only as needed for crop management, monitoring of CO2 emissions, improved vineyard biodiversity, organic fertilization, solar-powered electricity, and overall commitment to sustainable social and environmental practices. Arnaldo Caprai has initiated and participates in the New Green Revolution, a territorial sustainability protocol adopted by other wineries in the region. Buonissimo and Cheers!
